DSST school nixes namesake William Byers, Denver newspaper founder who defended Sand Creek Massacre

Growing up in the 70s, we knew this school as Byers Junior High School. Roughly one-third of each class that attended South High School came from Byers. It was announced last week, “Byers Middle and High schools will no longer bear the name of William Byers, founder of the now-closed Rocky Mountain News and a defender of the 1864 Sand Creek Massacre, in which U.S. soldiers attacked a peaceful camp of Cheyenne and Arapaho people on Colorado’s Eastern Plains. The schools will now be called DSST: Cedar Middle and High schools.”

It’s time once again to play “remember when” with your classmates from the South High Class of ’82 at our 40th reunion this summer! The planning has begun. It will most likely be on July 30rd or August 6th, 2022, so save the dates. Details will be coming soon.

COVID has certainly added some uncertainty, so we are in the process of gathering interest and contact information.
